Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full-time experience working in an educational setting which may include teaching, research, advising, administration and/or student programming/support (will consider equivalent experience and/or graduate assistantship work experience). Experience coordinating, organizing, and facilitating projects, programs, workshops, and/or events that demonstrate organizational skills and an ability to handle multiple tasks. Experience in drafting communications and reviewing and giving feedback on materials such as applications and proposals.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in a discipline that emphasizes writing, communication, and analytic skills. Research experience (e.g., graduate thesis, independent research, industry research), and/or experience with grant and proposal writing and development and/or scholarly activities represented by conference participation or public engagement. Demonstrated ability to advise students on the research process or other faculty-mentored academic experiences, including supporting students to find opportunities, writing proposals, and presenting research. Experience working with a diverse (first-generation, historically underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged) population of students in an academic environment.

Brief Description of Duties:
A leader in integrating research and education, the Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities (URECA) program promotes undergraduate research opportunities at Stony Brook University. Working with the URECA Director and other stakeholders throughout the campus community, a key focus for the Assistant Director is to expand the current portfolio of URECA and specifically, to expand undergraduate student access to research-oriented opportunities and other faculty-mentored academic experiences. The position will advise and connect students to research across all disciplines and promote a culture of inquiry among undergraduate students.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, a demonstrated ability to support students across disciplines, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the barriers facing students from backgrounds underrepresented in academic research.

Duties:

  • Program Management and Administration:
    • Lead efforts to enhance structured support for undergraduate students seeking research opportunities, and other research-oriented experiences, including programming and resources to assist students in developing a research portfolio.
    • Oversee the design and implementation of an introduction to research seminar for first-year students.
    • In collaboration with the Director of Faculty Engagement, identify and curate faculty-guided study experiences and mentoring for undergraduate students.
    • Co-manage the application, review and selection process for undergraduate research summer programs and mini-awards offered through URECA, including the Simons Summer Research Fellowship Program for high school students
    • Co-manage the application process for other prestigious awards managed through the URECA program, including the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, the Provost's Award for Academic Excellence, the SUNY Scharps Legal Essay Contest, and other initiatives.
    • Serve as a point of contact for internal and external agencies and represent the URECA program in lieu of the Director when unavailable.
  • Event Planning and Coordination:
    • Develop and implement events and activities to support earlier on-ramps for research engagement.
    • Support the planning and implementation of large scale events, including the annual Undergraduate Research Celebration of Undergraduate Research & Creativity, the annual Summer Symposium, the Simons SRP Closing Symposium, the URECA art exhibition, and other campus events related to undergraduate research and creative activities.
  • Program Communication and Outreach:
    • Develop student-facing outreach materials and promote awareness of high impact learning experiences, including research opportunities, creative activities, and projects.
    • Serve as a point of contact for faculty mentors seeking to recruit undergraduate research trainees.
    • Develop written communications highlighting undergraduate students in research, including the URECA newsletter and other media spotlights.
  • Proposal Writing and Data Collection:
    • Prepare grant applications and/or annual reports relating to undergraduate research and creative activities, including data collection and/or assessment activities for research programs; assist as needed with faculty proposals pertaining to undergraduate research.
    • Support initiatives that relate to undergraduate research, including mentoring initiatives.
    • Work with key partners (including Advancement) to develop relations with donors sponsoring undergraduate research, manage award selection for named URECA donor awards and communicate program outcomes.
    • Work with the URECA Director, Director of Faculty Engagement, and other leadership in the Division of Undergraduate Education to refresh and assess learning outcomes related to programming and opportunities.
  • Seminar Instruction:
    • Provide instruction for a research-focused seminar for first-year students.
    • Supervise, train, and evaluate a teaching assistant, as assigned.
  • Divisional Support:
    • Assist with Division of Undergraduate Education priorities, including supporting division-wide success initiatives.
    • Maintain positive and productive relationships with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
    • Liaison with all student service areas around undergraduate research engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
